Vertical (J.C. Scheid) was commissioned by Sarah Belle Reid in 2013. This work is written for solo trumpet and responsive electronics. The acoustic trumpet is captured during performance and processed in real time using MaxMSP, creating interactive layers of sound and texture.

The overall effect of the work is an exploration of musical form under the influence of personalized live-performance. Each musical phrase provides the listener with a vertical moments of sonic existence and invites the ear to release itself of expected tendencies within musical form.
