Manifold (2023) is a sonic investigation into temporal perception and memory—tiny moments that seem to persist indefinitely; precious encounters that degrade and slip away; forgotten rituals; spacious afternoons; astonishingly brief lifetimes. This work— for trumpet & interactive electronics, in quadraphonic sound—explores the collection, manipulation and distortion of moments in time through the use of feedback, looping, chaotic circuits, and granular processing in combination with experimental trumpet techniques. The result is a constantly churning and shape-shifting sound world that is at once intimate, relentless, whimsical, and surreal—frenetic improvisation, melting whispers, & punctuated silence.
Manifold premiered at the Akousma19 festival in Montreal, and has toured at national and international venues, including Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn, NY; Blaues Rauschen Festival in Essen, Germany, ImprovLab in Guelph, Ontario, the GroundHum Festival in Seattle, WA, and BrassWind Festival in Bergen, Norway.
The work is written for a minimum of 4-channel (quadraphonic) sound, but can potentially be scaled up for more channels of surround sound, creating an immersive experience for the listener. The main instruments used in this project are analog modular synthesizer, trumpet, and MaxMSP.
