Another Timepiece (2019) is an audio installation created by Sarah Belle Reid and Ryan Gaston. The piece features eight resonant metal plates networked together and activated by audio feedback. By treating these plates both as microphones and speakers, their own resonant tendencies gradually become apparent: through subtly time-delayed feedback processes, the objects' inherent resonances reveal a sort of truth...a truth that remains constant over time, and which can only be observed by compounding the present and past.
By extending this process across multiple objects, characteristics common to multiple plates create reinforcements—a commingling of past, future, and now, which favors representation of what each plate has in common. This sometimes creates ringing harmonies, sometimes chaotic noise, and sometimes silence...all depending on subtle details in the way time unfolds.
This work was exhibited at Practice Gallery in Philadelphia, PA during the month of July 2019. The opening gallery reception, which took place on July 5, 2019, featured a live performance by the artists (Sarah Belle Reid and Ryan Gaston), in which synthesizer and electronically augmented trumpet are used to further explore the sound world created by the metal plates.
